Limerick 37 0 – 3 Waterford United

Friday 30th May 2008

Waterford United struck three times without reply after the break to record a win over Limerick at Jackman Park. A 48th minute penalty from Gary Dunphy and two strikes from Michael Foley secured the points for the Suirsiders.

Neither side created much in the opening ten minutes, although Vinny Sullivan showed excellent control by taking down a lofted clearance inside Limerick’s area, but his diagonal shot was well saved by Dave Ryan.

The same player then headed inches wide from six yards some minutes earlier following a right wing cross from Willie John Kiely to the far post.

However, Lims created the best chance of the opening half when Chukwuma Manjor ran onto a through ball from Evan Quinlivan – but United keeper Ben Spicer raced swiftly off his line to save bravely at the striker’s feet after Manjor lost control of the ball.

Darren Harrington was at the heart of everything good for Limerick in the First half.At the other end, crosses from both wings from Kiely and Sullivan flashed across the six yard box as the home defence continued to live dangerously.

United edged ahead in the 48th minute when Kiely went down under a challenge from Limerick goalkeeper Ryan inside the box as he chased a through ball from David Breen, this was the 16th penalty conceded and scores in games Limerick have played so far this season.

The ref had no hesitation in awarding the penalty, and Dunphy confidently scored from the spot. The visitors doubled their advantage mid-way through the half, Michael Foley latching onto Kieran Fitzgeralds long ball to slot expertly past Ryan.

Foley then wrapped up the points with a point-blank finish following excellent work from Karl Bermingham on the left. Ross Cosgrave looked busy after coming on and had two shots on target in the final five minutes but his efforts were comfortably saved by Spicer.
