FC Carlow 0 - 2 Limerick
Sunday 27th September 2009Limerick Under 20s took a giant step forward in their bid to qualify out of their group with this hard earned win over FC Carlow at Tullow, Co Carlow. Qualification is now in Limerick’s own hands with two games remaining.
Limerick played with the wind in the first half and put the home team under pressure from the off. A short corner to David McGrath was played onto Cian Doyle who shot just wide at the near post. Daniel Clinton had a shot cleared off the line. After a sustained period of stalemate with both defenses on top and the play generally by-passing the midfield, Limerick again upped the tempo and Mike Sheehan headed over from a Dean Finnan corner. Limerick’s reward came five minutes before the break when Cian Doyle drifted in between the Carlow keeper and center half to finish a Jack Allen cross to the net.
On the resumption Carlow, now with the assistance of the wind, pressed hard for an equaliser, set pieces being their most effective weapon. However they came up against an in-form Mike Sheehan and Darren Lynch at the heart of the Limerick defence and when beaten Brian Collopy was there to make some very good saves. David Njuki and David McGrath always threatened on the break and the second and decisive goal came when Brian Collopy found David McGrath out on the left with a long kick out. David took on the defence and rifled a terrific shot to the net from a tight angle.
