Limerick 2 - 1 Cork City

Sunday 30th August 2009

Limerick played Cork City last Sunday in the League of Ireland U20s at Pike Rovers Sports Ground and the home side came away with a very impressive 2-1 victory.

Limerick started the game well and looked in control for the first twenty minutes with chances for the impressive striker Dave McGrath and Dean Finnan. But it was Cork City who struck first after a poor clearance in the Limerick defence the Cork City striker got to the ball before the onrushing Limerick keeper Brian Collopy to head into the empty net. Limerick responded in great style putting Cork under extreme pressure for the remainder of the half, which resulted in a well deserved equaliser. Dave McGrath finshed well on 40 minutes from just inside the box following excellent work from Derek Daly on the Limerick left wing.

The second half was much closer with Limerick having to battle hard all over the pitch with the defence showing up well. Limerick nearly scored through David Njuki just after the hour mark. Limerick kept up the pressure right to the end and 1 minute into injury time, they were rewarded when Dean Finnan turned the Cork City centre half inside out before rounding the keeper and coolly slotting home from 10 yards to send the sizeable crowd into raptors. Indeed Limerick could have scored a third when Cillian O'Connor brought an excellent save from the Cork City keeper when shooting from just outside the box.

The win leaves Limerick top of Pool 2 and strong contenders to qualify to the knock-out stages of the competition. Next up is Wexford Youths, who are also strong contenders.

Limerick: Brian Collopy, Tomás Barrett, Darren Lynch, Michael Sheehan, Ian Storan, Cian Doyle, Derek Daly, Peter Balogh (Garbhan Coughlan), Dean Finnan, David Njuki (Cillian O’Connor), David McGrath (Daniel Clinton).
