Limerick 1 - 3 Wexford Youths
Sunday 23rd August 2009Wexford Youths ran out 3-1 winners over Limerick FC in this entertaining game played at Pike Rovers Sports Grounds last Sunday afternoon. The score flattered the visitors in the end, as this was a closely fought contest. In spite of the heavy overnight rain the pitch was in excellent condition thanks to the Pike Rovers groundsman, Colm Lipper.
Wexford played against a strong wind and took the lead after 10 minutes when a looping header from Gareth McCurtin crept in at the far post. Limerick FC pushed on and created many half chances but failed to test the Wexford goalkeeper in the first half. Tomas Barrett was forced off with a gash in the head just before half time and was replaced by Christy Ward.
Early in the second half Limerick FC had a sweeping move up the left and when David McGrath pulled the ball back from the end line Gavin Roche was at hand to rifle a left foot shot to the net. Limerick FC then had an impressive 20 minutes but failed to add to their score. Gavin Roche had to leave field with 15 minutes left and his experience and drive were sorely missed. A physically stronger Wexford team came more into the game and scored two very well taken goals late in the game from Shane Dempsey and Kevin Rowe secured the points for the visitors.
The game was played in the right spirit and both teams played some excellent football. The good number in attendance will no doubt be back when Limerick FC entertain Cork City at the same venue next Sunday, kick–off 2:00pm.
