This season saw Limerick participate in the futsal league for the first time. Futsal is extremely popular in South America and is now also very popular in Europe. The FAI are promoting the game here with participation increasing all the time. The game itself is basically like indoor soccer, played on your bigger than average indoor court. The ball used in futsal is smaller and heavier than a normal ball which allows for a game perfect for improving speed and skill on the ground, of huge importance is a players first touch. Team work is vital with only 5 a side on a big court a huge workrate is required as is a big squad with rolling substitutions taking place every few minutes.
In Limerick's group were Cork City, Galway Utd and Waterford Utd, as expected in the end it came down to the two premier clubs to top the group with Cork City winning an incredibly exciting final game 6-5, Limerick finished 3rd with Waterford finishing bottom with no victories. Cork now advance to represent Munster in the latter stages where the will be hoping to emulate last years winners Shamrock Rovers.
The overall winners go on to represent Ireland in Europe while also picking up the winners cheque of 10,000 euro. The highlights for Limerick were a brilliant 6-5 victory over Cork on the opening weekend and Anthony McCormack's hat-trick against Waterford. Coached by Billy Barrett and Mike McCarthy, Limerick will be pleased with their first taste of this competition and hope to challenge the big boys next year. Best of luck to Cork in the finals and to Limerick's own Colm Carroll who is in the squad.
