Athlone Town 0 – 3 Limerick 37

Tierney 14, 58, Ryan 76

Athlone Town who were unbeaten at home for three months before Limerick ran riot against them at Lissywollen on Monday night, indeed had Limerick taken more of there many chances the defeat would have been even more comprehensive. This win will hopefully get Limerick back on track and help them find the form they had when winning four in a row last month.

Limerick had all the pressure early on with Paul Walsh and Gary Sheehan going close early on. Limerick’s opening goal came after 14 minutes, when John Tierney lost his defender inside the area from a Thomas Lyons through ball and the finish was clinical from ten yards.

The home side offered no real threat in the first half with Limerick totally dominant with Thomas Lyons and Jason Hughes running the game from the middle of the park.

Thirteen minutes into the second half Limerick deservedly extended their lead after Ian Rossiter’s sold his goalkeeper short with a poor back pass which was intercepted by John Tierney who rounded Kelly and finished superbly from a tight angle.

After 68 minutes Athlone had their first real chance of the game but Wayne Colbert who played right back on the night blocked Anthony Hayes shot after he had rounded Davy Ryan in the Limerick goal.

Paul Walsh was again tormenting the Athlone defense and Sheehan was again unlucky not to score on 70 minutes. Athlone had another chance on 73 minutes when Davy Ryan saved excellently from Russo in the Athlone attack.

Limerick sealed victory with a third goal on 76 minutes. An overrun Athlone Town defence could do little to stop Limerick as Tierney set up David Ryan who fired home to put the Super Blues 3-0 up. Limerick were unlucky not to add to their tally with Bobby Tier going close from close range late on.

Limerick will hope they can take this form into their next game at home to league leaders Dundalk this Friday night in Jackman Park, if Limerick can reproduce this form it is the league leaders who could find themselves put to the sword by Mike Kerleys young side.
